12 Years of ‘Halloween II’

12 Years of ‘Halloween II’

Twelve years ago today, Rob Zombie’s second entry in the Halloween franchise – 2009’s Halloween II – was released. A direct sequel to his 2007 “reimagining,” which was at that point the highest-grossing entry in the series, Halloween II would ultimately leave both the hardcore Halloween fans and the casual audience polarized. Its depiction of Michael was that unlike we had seen in the prior films; the film had a more visceral, cerebral and even arthouse tone to it; and it was by far the most brutal entry in the franchise to date.

But as the film found its release on the home video format, an extended “director’s cut” became the version most easily accessed, and fan reception seemed to have grown. Perhaps similarly to another entry in the franchise, Halloween II has now developed a cult following all on its own. I myself rank the director’s cut version highly, and remember it being a popular entry back in the days of the Official Halloween Message Board at ohmb.net.

Rob Zombie marked the occasion with a heartfelt post about the film on his Instagram; the writer-director-producer has talked openly in the past about the struggles he had making the film due to interference from The Weinstein Company, but it’s nice to see he still remembers the film fondly nonetheless.

Lionsgate Now Distributing Halloween II?

Lionsgate Now Distributing Halloween II?

In a weird twist, the free Tubi streaming app is now streaming the theatrical cut of Rob Zombie’s Halloween II from 2009. However, what’s worth noting is that the opening logos of the film are now replaced with Lionsgate’s logo, which would imply the studio – that currently owns the distribution rights to the original Halloween, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers – now has Zombie’s sequel as well.

This also raises the question… do they have Rob Zombie’s first Halloween as well? If so, that would bring the eleven Halloween films to just a mere three distributors in the United States – Lionsgate would have five, Universal would have three (Halloween II, Season of the Witch, 2018’s Halloween as well as the two upcoming sequels), and Paramount would have three (the ‘Dimension’ trilogy of The Curse of Michael Myers, Halloween H20 and Halloween Resurrection). That would be a first for the series, which has typically had one of the most complicated licensing agreements of any film franchise.

Furthermore, if that is the case… could another box set be on the horizon soon? Probably not given Lionsgate’s lack of licensing out their titles in the past, and Universal now considering Halloween an active property for them, but it is worth thinking about…

…And campaigning for, if need be.

Body Count Page Now Live

Body Count Page Now Live

I’ve spent the last two days going through the films, taking different captures of the deaths and bodies, tracking down applicable photos when needed and then editing them all, but I’m pleased to say the body count page is now live! It’ll be updated with the 2018 film and photos of the alternate & deleted deaths sometime this evening or tomorrow morning, but the first ten films are there otherwise.
